Basic Function: This position ensures that the railroad has an adequate number of properly maintained locomotives to handle its transportation requirements.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to: Chief Mechanical Officer
Supervises: Leadmen
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Oversee servicing, inspection, troubleshooting, and replacement of components on locomotives, freight cars and passenger cars.
  • Ensure that work is done within the department’s budget parameters
  • Have thorough knowledge of locomotives, their components and how they interrelate.
  • Have thorough knowledge of locomotive and railcar maintenance procedures.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of all Company, FRA and AAR rules and regulations governing inspection, maintenance and repair of locomotives and other rolling stock.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of all Company, FRA and AAR rules and regulations governing safety and safe operations.
  • Ability to effectively supervise mechanical department personnel, directing them to accomplish specific tasks on a daily basis both in the shop and in the field.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both railroad and non-railroad personnel.
  • Maintain parts and equipment inventories and be able to account for same if called upon to do so.
  • Inspect locomotives according to established schedules.
  • Maintain and improve the maintenance shop.
  • Ability to estimate costs associated with maintenance projects.
  • Conduct meetings with both railroad and non-railroad personnel.
  • File all required reports in a timely manner.
Job Requirements:

Education, Licenses/Certifications and Work Experience:

High school graduate or equivalent required. Ten years of experience in the rail industry, or a Associates or Bachelors degree plus five years of mechanical experience preferred. Ability to maintain a valid state-issued driver’s license for operation of company vehicles on state highways required; at minimum, an operator’s license for trucks less than 26,001 pounds G.V.W. (one-half-ton or one-ton trucks).

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities and Mental Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge of locomotives and railcars, their components, and how they interrelate
  • Thorough knowledge of locomotive and railcar maintenance procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of all railroad and FRA/AAR safety regulations and practices
  • Thorough knowledge of FRA/AAR rules and regulations governing the inspection, maintenance, and repair of locomotives and railcars
  • Ability to communicate clearly with both railroad and non-railroad personnel
  • Ability to make inspections of locomotives and other equipment
  • Ability, as required, to work safely as part of a team with one or more other people.

Physical Requirements:

Constant (67-100%) lifting and carrying of tools weighing up to 60 pounds. Constant (67-100%) climbing aboard locomotives and railcars. Frequent (34-66%) walking on uneven surfaces, inclined shoulders, rough ballasted surfaces. Both daytime and nighttime visual acuity, near and far, required. Depth perception and field of vision important in judging properly when climbing on and off equipment, and when walking along inclined slopes.

Must possess at least 20/40 in each eye with or without corrective lenses. Must be able to recognize and distinguish colors displayed by signals, signs, etc. Must possess an average hearing threshold (in the better ear) of 40db at 500HZ 1000HZ and 2000HZ, aided or unaided

Working Conditions:

Exposure to severe weather and extreme temperatures possible. Exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dust, pollen, etc., possible.
Various hours, both daylight and nighttime, possible.
