Thank you for your interest in The Indiana Rail Road Company, and welcome to our online home! We are a 500-mile regional railroad system serving central and southern Indiana, and central Illinois, along with access to the Chicago and Louisville gateways.
Indiana Rail Road hauls a variety of energy, industrial and consumer products, such as refrigerators for General Electric, sweeteners for Hershey chocolates, petroleum products for Marathon, and plastics for brands such as Tide, Ice Mountain and Ritz crackers.
I founded the Indiana Rail Road in 1986 with one, key principal in mind: to run a railroad like a business, putting customer service above all other priorities, except safety.
As a result, we’re celebrating our 29th anniversary with an infrastructure that is in better condition than at any point in its history. It wasn’t always that way, however. When the Indiana Rail Road was founded, we purchased a property that a previous owner had attempted to abandon; a lack of customer service had driven many companies to choose trucks over rail.
Given our geographic location in the “Crossroads of America,” other nearby railroads and transportation options make our market fiercely competitive. But our employees have been very successful in identifying and creating new business opportunities, and delivering imaginative and dynamic business solutions for our customers.
As a result, business has grown more than 12-fold since 1986, and we have been able to invest more than $100 million in private capital to make Indiana Rail Road the world-class, heavy-haul franchise it is today. We will invest an additional $65 million in infrastructure over the next five years to stay ahead of projected growth.
We also believe a strong commitment to the communities through which we operate is important, and that’s why we sponsor various community based programs and host the annual Indiana Rail Road Santa Train, always a popular Holiday tradition.
